A broad dune landscape, bird’s-eye view. In the background the sea. A dog is chasing a rabbit which has almost reached its burrow. The heavy clouds provide a contrast between light and shadow in the landscape. Jacob van Ruisdael was one of the most important landscape painters of the 17th century. His paintings of the dunes near Haarlem were known as ‘Haarlempjes’.
