Two artists created one painting: Dirck van Delen painted the interior with classical pillars and arches and Dirck Hals, brother of Frans Hals did the staffage. The company is very elegantly dressed, eating, drinking and flirting. The painting warns against profligacy and lightheartedness. Left, two men playing backgammon, a popular game in the 17th century. The essential ingredient of backgammon was the element of chance. It was also known as the ‘verkeer-spel’, the game of turns – anything can happen, it can turn anything upside down.
