The Licentious Kitchen Maid

By Pieter Gerritsz Roestraten

The Licentious Kitchen Maid
The Licentious Kitchen Maid The Licentious Kitchen Maid

Realistic, though not a scene taken from everyday life. This is an erotic tableau. The woman is shameless. A monkey, the epitome of indecency, leers up her dress. The monkey is on a chain and reminds us that man is a prisoner of his own sinful lust. The picture has a message, emphasised by the warning of the old man’s raised finger: beware of sinful behaviour. The creator of this painting, Pieter van Roestraten, was a pupil of Frans Hals. He married Ariaentge Hals, his master’s daughter.
