At first glance, it seems a photographic model is posing here. Her pose is that of an old-fashioned Hollywood diva: stylish, holding a cigarette. However, a close look reveals that the model bears scars from burns caused by an aeroplane disaster in Faro, Portugal (1990). Koos Breukel’s photographs often tell a traumatic story in a subtle manner. The surface conceals a tragic incident. The images are also somewhat documentary in character. In ‘Model’, the woman’s expression is conspicuously neutral. She shows her wounds without emotion.
