A boy and a girl stare intently at the camera. As if they wish to tell the viewer about the misery of their existence. The girl displays a large swelling around the eye, as if she has been seriously abused. The boy holds her protectively. Is he the only person who is concerned about her? These people dwell on the edges of society, facing danger on a daily basis, and with inadequate medical facilities. The picture is part of ‘Case History’. In this series, photographer Boris Mikhailov aims to show the injustices of his homeland, what used to be Russia. He portrayed alcholics, homeless people and psychiatric patients. These are the people who fell by the wayside when the communist system disintegrated.
